New Changes to Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Insurance in Georgia
Uninsured Motorist Insurance provides coverage from your insurance
company if the at fault driver does not have insurance, is underinsured
or is not identified. It is stackable with all motor vehicle policies
of relatives in the household. Covers Medical expenses, Lost Wages,
Pain and Suffering, Property losses and loss of consortium.
January 1, 2009, Georgia adopted a law requiring auto insurers
to offer revised Uninsured Motorists Coverage unless rejected in
writing.
The new Uninsured Motorists Coverage now provides protection that
will pay for your damages in addition to the at-fault driver's liability
coverage limit up to you Uninsured Motorists Coverage limit. This
coverage applies unless you elect the Traditional Uninsured Motorists
Coverage (reduced coverage) that will only pay up to the difference
between the at-fault drivers' liability coverage and your traditional
Uninsured Motorists Coverage.
Under the old Uninsured Motorists Law, if you are involved in an
accident where the at-fault party has $25,000.00 Liability Coverage
and you have $25,000.00 Uninsured Motorists Coverage, you would
only receive $25,000.00. Under the new Uninsured Motorist law, you
will be able to stack the two policies for a total of $50,000.00
coverage available.
